Themes by Shmoop

During this year we have read The Outsiders, A Child Called It, Four Perfect Pebbles, Anne Frank, The Pigman, Mockingjay as well as two book reports. Please take a universal theme that is included in at least two of these books and discuss how they are used in those two selections.

The pigman and the child called it are similar. They both deal with being hurt and beaten. In the chilled called it the child got beat for no reason. On the other hand, in the pigman the children got beaten for going to a strangers house. Both had parts in them that relate to each other. -Elaina Whiteman 1st period

In the books, "A Child Called It," and "The Pigman" are the same. Mr. Pignati was sad because his wife died, and then Bobo died. Dave was beaten and almost starved to death. Lorraines mom also said she was to fat, she just couldnt stop saying mean things to her. John didnt really have great parents either. Dave had a supportive family in his early childhood but his mom started drinking and beating him daily. Both stories had a theme that relate to each other.

"The Outsiders" and "Mockingjay" are similar. They both deal with conflict and division between everyone in the population. Everyone in both books had to focus on surviving and outrunning people. In "The Outsiders" Johnny and Ponyboy had to run away because they had killed a man, and had to hide from the police. In "Mockinjay" Katniss, and everyone with her were running away to find tactics to kill Snow, while in the process running and hiding from the peacekeepers and everyone against them. These two books had themes that relate to each other in many ways.

The outsiders and the child called it are both books about children not living in there homes and getting respected. In these books they both lost there parents and where not very communicated with them either. So both of these books have the same theme because they both have violence in them and they seem to deal with the same thing and they are both children where they lived in the streets with violence.

Anne Frank and Four Perfect Pebbles are very similar in how they both deal with a little girl facing the Nazis in the Holocaust. They are both tragic stories about mass genocide in the early 1900's.

"The Outsiders" and "Anne Frank" are two book with very similar themes. They both deal with people who are outcasts. For example, in "The Outsiders", Ponyboy and his gang are greasers. They struggle with getting along with the Socs and they have to run away and hide from the police. In "Anne Frank", Anne and her family struggle with getting along with the Van Danns and they have to hide from the Nazis. In both of these books, there is man vs. man conflict and there is man vs. himself conflict. The man vs. himself in "The Outsiders was when Johnny was feeling guilty about killing the Soc. In "Anne Frank", the people in the secret annex were having trouble agreeing with each other an there was a lot of arguing. The universal theme in these books are the same.

The story of Anne Frank and Four perfect pebbles are very similar. These two stories are very similar because they both deal with the Nazis capturing the jews. Anne Frank is actually a diary of Anne Franks that she wept in while she was in The Secret Annex. And Four Perfect Peebles is about this girl who is a Jew getting captured by the Nazis. So these stories are both very similar.

The Diary of Anne Frank and The Outsiders are similar. Both are about the struggle of knowing right from wrong in society. Then the Outsiders, Pony boy’s life style at home is abusive; where in Anne Frank they having to run from the Nazis to avoid their abuse. The outsiders, Pony Boy is running from a crime he has committed and has to turn to his friend Dally for help to hide from the police. Anne is helping the other Jews to hide from the Nazi and not be taken to conservation camps.

Anne Frank and Four Perfect Pebbles are similar in so many ways. They both are about the Holocaust and how people from that society are being treated. Both of these stories are alike because they both were both part of Jewish families and were both captured by the Nazis. The diary of Anne Frank was written by her before the Nazis captured, and sent her to a consentation camp. Four perfect pebbles is about a little girl that was captured by the Nazis and sent to a consentation camp.

In one of the book reports I made I read "Winterdance". "Winterdance" is about a dog sledder who runs the Ilterod which is about a 1000 mile race. I find "Winterdance" and "A Child Called It" are similar. In both books the main characters both have to not give up to accomplish their goal. David from "A Child Called It" has a goal to not let his mother win at breaking him. Gary from "Winterdance" his goal was to complete his first dog race. In the end the both completed their goals.

The books the outsiders and moking jay are alike. They are alike because there is action and killing in these two books. They are also alike because the characters are almost similar. And i guess you could say the greasers and socs just like the districts in mocking jay could be gangs. And if you wanted to add one more it could be the pitman because the endings in these books are really sad. In conclusion these are how they are alike.

The books Anne Frank and Four Perfact Pebbles have very similar themes. A central theme of these books is mortality. They both tried their best to get away from the nazis because they knew that their lives were in danger if caught. They both tried to hide from them the best that they could. Anne Frank and her family would do stuff like not go downstairs, always Walk around in socks, not flush the toilet during the day, and many other things to not get caught. In Four Perfact Pebbles, Marion and her family tried to get away from the nazis by getting a visa to go to a different country. Both of the main characters were caught and ended up being sent away to the concentration camps.

Anne Frank was my favorite! She was very inspirational and so was four perfect pebbles. I think they are alike because they both deal with the holocaust. The holocaust was about Natzi soldiers taking Jewish families. It was very sad because children was killed and the others went to death camps. The elder and crippled were also killed because they couldn't work. Finally the world did something resulting to World War II. Many people were killed in the war but it was for a good cause. Hitler was in charge of this whole fiasco. He almost wiped out a whole race of people! We will forever remember the war by reading these books.

Out of all the books we've read, "Four Perfect Pebbles" and The Diary of Anne Frank" are similar in many ways. They are both books that tell about the Holocost and the tragedys that occurred at the time. The Holocost was about the Nazis killing Jews and the minotity of the population. Four Perfect Pebbles was about a young girl in the Holocost and so was the diary of Anne Frank. These books are very similar.

We have read many novels this year. But, the novels with the most similarity are "Four Perfect Pebbles," and "The Diary of Anne Frank." They are both talking about life during the Holocaust. The Holocaust was one of the most tragic times in world history. The theme that relates these two books are sadness. Anne Frank died at a very young age during the Holocaust. The girl in Four Perfect Pebbles tried to find 4 pebbles that were exactly alike, and if she did, her family would survive the desperate time. These books are very similar in setting and plot.

The books I chose were A Child Called It and The Outsiders. Both of these books share a common theme of children having a rough life. In The Outsiders, the Greasers deal with many problems as kids everyday. They are profiled as being criminals and the Socs beat them. In A Child Called It, Dave Pelzer is beaten and abused by his mother everyday. As you can see, both of these books are both about children being horribly treated and abused.

The two books that i think are similar are 'Four Perfect Pebbles" and "Anne Frank". These two have a similar theme because they were both about a young girl who was taken by the German Nazis. Anne Frank's family was separated during the holocaust as was the other main character's. The narrator of 'Four Perfect Pebbles" was looking for four matching pebbles to represent her family. Each of the four members in her family were represented by a pebble and if she found four matching pebbles, she believed that meant her family would be together unharmed. Anne was sick and tied to stay alive because her sister Margot was still there. Once Margot died from typhus Anne gave up and died shortly after her. Anne gave up because she was no longer with her family. Therefore, 'Four Perfect Pebbles' and 'Anne Frank" are alike in theme, setting, and plot.

"Mockingjay" and "The Outsiders" have a similar theme. Both of these stories are based around a society split because of wealth and power. In "The Outsiders" the Greasers and the Socs are split by money. They often get into fights over where they get to hang out and girls. They don't like each other because the Greasers are seen as poor hoodlums while the Socs are seen as perfect and angelic. In "Mockingjay" the people in the districts are seen as poor people and have no use to the Capitol. The Capitol is full of rich people who are protected and saved from the hunger games. They don,t have to endure the problems the people in the districts face.

2 books, in my opinion, that are similar are "A Child Called It" and "The Outsiders." One wasy is that both main characters have lost someone important like the Child's father and Johnny. Another similarity is that the main characters were different, like the Child's unclean body and being the gang on the poor side of town.

In the books The Outsiders and The Pigman, a common theme of loneliness is shared. In The Outsiders, Ponyboy and his gang of Greasers are social outcasts. Furthermore, in the book, two of Pony's six gang member die, leaving his distraught and heartbroken. In The Pigman, John and Lorraine end up befriending Mr. Pignati after prank calling him because they have no friends besides each other. Mr. Pignati is someone they can find solace in. These two books both explore the pains of loneliness, the joys of friendship, and the undeniable suffering of losing people close to you.

The two books I am picking that go together is "The Outsiders" and "Mockingjay". Both of them have some similar themes. For instance, in "Mockingjay" Katniss and her district 13 were at war with president Snow. In the book "The Outsiders" one of the main conflicts was between the greasers and the socs. The socs thought they were superior to the greasers because they had more money and better cars than them. President Snow is kind of like the socs in a way. Both of them thought they were above the law than the rest of the people. Katniss and the rebels were just like the greasers. Both only function best as a group and not just one person.

A universal theme pivotal to the plots of both The Outsiders and The Diary Of Anne Frank is isolation. Isolation is the state of feeling or being separate from everyone else or completely alone. In The Outsiders, this theme is clearly showcased in the main character, Ponyboy: as a Greaser, he's isolated from the rest of society (the middle-class, the Socs, etc.), and, even within his own group, his interest in things like books, movies, and nature estranges him from the others. In addition, Dally felt isolated from the rest of humanity after Johnny died; in other words, he felt alone in the world. Similarly, in The Diary of Anne Frank, the characters (who are in hiding in the Secret Annex) are cut off from the rest of the world; however, these characters are alone together. Though their shared isolation causes numerous arguments, they still have each other as a support system and are able to create a close bond that allows them to endure their time in hiding.

The Universal Theme of "Four Perfect Pebbles" and "The Diary of Anne Frank" would be the dealing with the tragedy and atrocities of the Holocaust. Being Jewish, I see these books as being very powerful in making sure that generations to come are able to read first hand documentation via writers passing along what their experiences were during this horrible part of world history. It is unfortunate that Anne Frank and her family perished at the hands of the Nazi's, but thankfully Marion Blumenthal's family was able to survive and make it to the United States (except her father who died from Typhus right after being liberated from the Concentration Camp).

"The Outsiders" and "Mocking Jay" are pretty similar in the fact that they both have one or more people who aren't part of the general crowd. Both books have someone who doesn't fit in, but eventually overcomes that and rises to the top. The main character in both books has inner conflict that they need to overcome in order to achieve greatness. Though they went through many hardships they rose above all and ended up on top.

four perfect pebbles and the diary of Anne frank are simmaler because they both deal with jews trying to survive the holocaust. Anne is hiding in a attic and the narrator of four perfect pebbles is already in a Nazi camp trying to survive. they both show the detail of the holocaust and how gruesome and horrible it really is. Anne could not walk around for some time because they could not risk being caught and the same similarity goes into play in four perfect pebbles they had to listen to the Nazis in order to survive.

A Child Called It and The Oustiders both have a common theme. The common theme is that anger never solves anything. Four perfect pebbles and Anne Frank are very similar because they both take place during World War 2 and in the holocaust. In "The Bridge to Terabithia", both students in the book know how it is to live in a poor society while everyone else in their school, like students and teachers, are fortunate enough to live in a wealthy society. The Pigman and The Outsiders are smiling becuase they revolve around treating friends like family. The Greasers are one large family in The Outsiders, and John and Lorraine begin to think of Mr. Pignati as a father figure, something neither of them, or the greasers, for that matter, ever truly had. They show how family can be found in all sorts of places and how it is one of the most important aspects of human life. The universal theme of individual vs. society is apparent in two books I've read for my book reports. In Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry the family is faced with the discrimination against blacks in the time period. They face many problems in their community due to their skin color. Society goes against something they cannot change about themselves. Another book I read was Suicide Notes From Beautiful Girls. In this book, a girl fakes her own suicide to escape pressures of society. She decides she can't always be the happy fun-loving girl everyone knows her as. In both situations, society is making it difficult on the individual. You can find themes like this one in many books due to real problems in the world with society versus everyone.

Two books that we read this that are similar are, the play, "The Diary of Anne Frank" and, the book, "Four Perfect Pebbles". This is because 1) they happen during the same time period, 2) both happen at concentration camps during WWII. In "The Diary of Anne Frank", Anne Frank narrates how her life went on in the secret annex for two years. It also tells the readers of how they were found, and the conditions it took, not to be found. In "Four Perfect Pebbles", a little girl was taken to a concentration camp with her family. It tells the readers about her point of view and how the Nazis were tormenting the Jews. She later finds four perfect pebbles to suit her family, for good luck. They end up in a former Russian area, and find an abounded home. Soon after the war ended, the little girl, her mother, and her older brother move to a big city, where they try to make that place their home.
